The Human Rights Initiative gladly invites you to the following public lecture:
Human Rights and the Baha’i Community in Iran
by Prem Kumar Rajaram (CEU Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, CEU Associate Provost for the Social Sciences and Humanities)
Tuesday, May 7
Nador 13, Room 001
5 pm
In 2008 seven Baha’i leaders were arrested by the Iranian state. Following closed juridical proceedings, the seven were sentenced to twenty years in prison. The imprisonment of these seven Baha’is follows, and may be a part of, wider state-led violations of the human and social rights of the Baha’i community in Iran. These violations have increased in scope and number over the past ten or so years. This talk is intended to share information on these violations, and makes reference to an international campaign marking the fifth year of the imprisonment of the seven Baha’i community leaders. Particular reference will be made to the denial of access to higher education of the Baha’i community in Iran.
More information on the campaign can be found here: http://www.bic.org/fiveyears/
And more information on the arrest can be found in many news media, for example:
